"…I was not encouraged to be in sports as I might "break my wrist,” and my parents’ challenge to me "what would happen if you couldn't take your science test or play the flute?” was left unanswered.
I lived on the noodles and bags of frozen broccoli most of college and medical school because they were the cheapest palatable option that would not spoil. I purchased bulk items during my infrequent trips to the store after bumming a ride off a friend...
Even after graduation from medical school, where I don't recall being offered any nutrition classes, I can't say I was more well informed...
Meanwhile at home, struggling with three kids under the age of two and working 14 hour nights, I considered presenting any…supper on the table as a success. If we were all showered? Bonus! My sleep cycle, if you can call it that, was dysfunctional at best...
Average Americans can appreciate the benefits of weight loss, but might not also understand that they would save time and money and risky side effects merely by changing what goes into their mouths. I spend a large percentage of my week discussing pharmaceuticals and writing refills as well as new prescriptions for life-saving medications in these two scenarios. Admittedly many times daily we discuss medications for diabetes and weight loss, but I know there's a better way. And the cure needs to start decades before anyone is talking about prescription medications...
I can do a better job for myself. I can do a better job for my family. I can do a better job for patients. We can all work together to create a better outcome."
